Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's...Buffy the Vampire Slayer

As cynical as I can be sometimes, I generally manage to hold my tongue when it comes to franchises that are close to my heart. Sometimes however, those franchises will commit a crime that cannot be overlooked...

A couple of months ago, I wrote a reveiw of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8. I was still feeling fairly positive about the series at the time, so it wasn't a particularly fair review, but I did hint that cracks were beginning to show. The writing was sagging under the wieght of an overly complcaited storyline and in some issues was just downright bad. I concluded in the review that I would try and remain positive and I did try but this month's issue brought developments in the storyline that were just too strange to ignore...

Buffy flew...

Now, as a longterm devoted folllower of the Buffyverse, I've seen some crazy storylines(Angel season 4 *cough*) but this latest development just seems....Retarded. Even as a resolution to the current storyarch it makes no sense and leaves me with more questions than answers but worst of all is that it just doesn't seem to fit, not unless they decide to pull off yet another slovle-all solution like they did in season 7.

I suppose we'll have to wait and see...

I like Sons of Anarchy. That is not a particularly controversial statement, in the seven years that the show was on television it garnered a sizeable following and it's easy to see why: the show's narrative is pure crime fiction of the most enjoyable kind. I first came across the world of Image comics though an unlikely source: Tomb Raider. Sometime in 1998, during the height of the original game trilogy's popularity, I picked up an issue of Image's Tomb Raider/Witchblade crossover series. Although initially more interested in Lara croft's side of the story, I quickly latched to the character of Sara Pezzini and her symbiotic weapon the witchblade and found myself intrigued by it's powers as well as the universe it inhabited. The Witchblade series, with it's action-packed storylines and varied and brutal backstory, fired my imagination and I soon found myself hungry for more. Kick Ass is...Well, kick ass!

Last week I went out to the cinema and was treated to what I consider to be the first genuinely enjoyable Hollywood adaptation of a comic book since Watchmen: Kick Ass. Like every other comic book devotee, this movie was no suprise to me. Almost as soon as it was first published by Marvel in 2008, it was clear that Mark Millar's story of a comic book nerd who gets to live out his fantasies was crying out to be turned into a script. As ever, I was cynical. Kick Ass' central brilliance stems from it's ability to poke fun at it's audience: "If you've ever thought about becoming a superhero, this is how badly you'd fail" it says without ever forgetting that, at it's heart, it's still a comic book movie. The film manages to balance humour and action more successfully in it's attempt to parody the genre than many straight comic book movies.
