Seeing orange

As a writer, my main concern in writing this blog is the way in which comics are written and the direction in which that writing is headed. As such, I never pay too much attention to artwork, sure, There have been some magnificant covers over the years(I'm a particuar fan of Jo Chen's work for the covers of Buffy Season 8) but usually, it's the writing I care about, not the art.


Until now...


Eariler this month, UK manga distrubutors Tokyopop released a new graphic novel called "Orange" with full colour artwork by an artist called Benjamin. I've haven't got around to checking it out yet but, from what I've seen so far it's definately going on my wishlist for the artwork alone, even if the angst ridden story is horrificly unoriginal...

I like Sons of Anarchy. That is not a particularly controversial statement, in the seven years that the show was on television it garnered a sizeable following and it's easy to see why: the show's narrative is pure crime fiction of the most enjoyable kind. The assorted characters that inhabit the titular outlaw motorcycle club are the friendly, likeable, family orientated face of the criminal underworld, in a world full of bad guys, they are the least bad. I first came across the world of Image comics though an unlikely source: Tomb Raider. Sometime in 1998, during the height of the original game trilogy's popularity, I picked up an issue of Image's Tomb Raider/Witchblade crossover series. Although initially more interested in Lara croft's side of the story, I quickly latched to the character of Sara Pezzini and her symbiotic weapon the witchblade and found myself intrigued by it's powers as well as the universe it inhabited. The Witchblade series, with it's action-packed storylines and varied and brutal backstory, fired my imagination and I soon found myself hungry for more. It was then that I found myself moving towards Witchblade's sister series, The Darkness. Kick Ass is...Well, kick ass!

Last week I went out to the cinema and was treated to what I consider to be the first genuinely enjoyable Hollywood adaptation of a comic book since Watchmen: Kick Ass. Like every other comic book devotee, this movie was no suprise to me. Almost as soon as it was first published by Marvel in 2008, it was clear that Mark Millar's story of a comic book nerd who gets to live out his fantasies was crying out to be turned into a script. As ever, I was cynical. Kick Ass' central brilliance stems from it's ability to poke fun at it's audience: "If you've ever thought about becoming a superhero, this is how badly you'd fail" it says without ever forgetting that, at it's heart, it's still a comic book movie. The film manages to balance humour and action more successfully in it's attempt to parody the genre than many straight comic book movies.
