The dawning of of a new era?

Hello again, fellow Panelhoppers!

As I have previously mentioned, I have something of a love-hate relationship with the Marvel universe: On the one hand, Stan Lee's characters are my childhood icons, forever etched into my brain in their techinicolour costumes and famous poses, and on the other they have refused, time and again, to grow up as I have, remaining stuck in the familiar, safe pattens and plotlines of the good ol' days and, while I know Marvel have good reason to do so, this behaviour has begun to bother me; particularly when Marvel's contempories seem so open to change.

However, it seems that my fears about Marvel's future may be about to be put to rest...Thanks to Dark Regin.

Dark Regin, for those of you who don't already know, has almost completely changed the face of the Marvel universe by allowing Norman Osborune, formily the Green Goblin, to become the leader of the avengers. This event has opened up a whole new set of directions for Marvel writers to take their characters and personally, I find it extremely exciting, with the prospect of dark X-teams finally becoming a reality...

My only worry is that we've seen this all before. Every time Marvel attempt to change their image, it inveriably gets reverted back to the old, safe state of play...Only time will time I suppose...

I like Sons of Anarchy. That is not a particularly controversial statement, in the seven years that the show was on television it garnered a sizeable following and it's easy to see why: the show's narrative is pure crime fiction of the most enjoyable kind. The assorted characters that inhabit the titular outlaw motorcycle club are the friendly, likeable, family orientated face of the criminal underworld, in a world full of bad guys, they are the least bad. Kick Ass is...Well, kick ass!

Last week I went out to the cinema and was treated to what I consider to be the first genuinely enjoyable Hollywood adaptation of a comic book since Watchmen: Kick Ass. Like every other comic book devotee, this movie was no suprise to me. Almost as soon as it was first published by Marvel in 2008, it was clear that Mark Millar's story of a comic book nerd who gets to live out his fantasies was crying out to be turned into a script. As ever, I was cynical. Kick Ass' central brilliance stems from it's ability to poke fun at it's audience: "If you've ever thought about becoming a superhero, this is how badly you'd fail" it says without ever forgetting that, at it's heart, it's still a comic book movie. The film manages to balance humour and action more successfully in it's attempt to parody the genre than many straight comic book movies. The Origin Story

Welcome Fellow comic lovers to the first, suitably actionpacked, issue of Kerrpow! My limited edition blog on the ever changing faces and maskes of the Comics industry. To start, lets tackle the the big boys by doning our secert identities, taking to the rooftops and going toe-to-toe with Marvel. Marvel Comics has always been a great source of pleasure to me, continually managing the balance between the new wave of dark antiheroism and its own playful 60's roots.
